Why Board and Train

The Benefits of Board and Train Programs for Your Dog

I recently stumbled upon a local suggestion that advised against board and train programs for dogs, and I couldn't help but feel compelled to share why I firmly believe in their value. It honestly makes zero sense to dismiss a training option that can be so beneficial, especially for dogs struggling behaviorally at home. If someone is reaching out for assistance due to their dog displaying certain challenging behaviors—let’s call them x, y, or z—how can we expect them to not only teach their dog new behaviors but also make necessary lifestyle changes at the same time?

Let me draw a parallel from my own experience: I’ve been trying to lose weight while juggling gym sessions and dietary changes. Trust me, doing both simultaneously is HARD. But when I focus on one aspect at a time, it becomes easier to build lasting habits. It’s common sense that we often struggle when trying to do too many things at once. So why would it be any different when it comes to teaching our dogs a whole new skill set and communication style? It simply doesn’t add up!

Moreover, your dog deserves a knowledgeable and patient teacher to help them reach their full potential. A board and train program creates an optimal learning environment where dogs can build new habits and skills. This is facilitated by trainers who speak the same language as the dogs, understand their needs, and can communicate effectively what is desired of them. This reduces stress for your dog and allows for more effective learning.

I completely understand that the thought of sending your dog away can be daunting. I’ve been in that position before I became a trainer myself; I sent my dog away for six months, and it was tough. However, a good trainer will provide regular updates, set up lessons, and keep you involved in the training process every step of the way. They break down each lesson into simple, digestible parts, making it easy for you to understand and implement what your dog is learning at home.

When everything comes together seamlessly in a board and train program, it’s truly a beautiful process—almost like an art form. Yes, this type of training requires time and a bit of sacrifice, but the rewards are absolutely worth it. Often, the depth of understanding and behavioral transformation achieved through a dedicated board and train program cannot be obtained through standard classes alone.

This is just my perspective, of course. I don’t claim to know everything about dog training; I only know what I observe in the dogs that come through my doors. So, if you’re considering options for training your dog, don’t overlook the significant benefits of board and train programs. With the right trainer and a focused approach, you can set your dog on a path to lasting success and improvement.
